Welcome to the group exhibition Humans and other Animals at Ystad Konstmuseum curated by artist Lisa Strömbäck that opens on November 22nd. For this exhibition I will show selected drawings and objects from the project Archive of Lost Tails.

Om utställningen
Den 22 november öppnar grupputställningen ”Människor och andra djur”, kuraterad av konstnären Lisa Strömbeck. Genom måleri, skulptur, video och installation av svenska och internationella konstnärer undersöks livsvillkoren för de djur som lever nära människan, de vi kallar för husdjur och boskap. De känslomässiga och sociala relationerna står i centrum.
Hundens DNA avvek från vargens för mellan 27 000 och 40 000 år sedan. Uroxen domesticerades för omkring 10 000 år sedan. Sedan dess har väldigt mycket hänt. Idag bor grisar, kor och höns i fabriker och är osynliga för de flesta människor. De ska växa snabbt för att ge oss mat så billigt som möjligt. Samtidigt räknas hundar och katter i många hem som familjemedlemmar med samma värde som människor.
Oavsett hur husdjuren lever, är det vi människor som har makten över dem. I ”Människor och andra djur” gestaltas dessa maktrelationer tillsammans med den stora kärleken och likheten mellan oss däggdjur.

Om utställningens curator
Lisa Strömbeck är född 1966 i Andrarum i östra Skåne. Idag bor och arbetar hon i Ny Hammersholt i Danmark. Sedan studietiden på Det Kongelige Danske Konstakademi i slutet av 1990-talet har hennes verk ställts ut över hela världen. Hennes konstnärliga praktik omfattar fotografi, video och installation. I sitt arbete omfamnar Strömbeck motsättningarna kärlek, ägande och makt. Ett återkommande tema är hierarkierna mellan människor och andra djur, där hon vill väcka empati för de mindre lyckligt lottade. Mellan 1997 och 2009 producerade Strömbeck även verk i det offentliga rummet med det feministiska konstnärskollektivet Kvinder på Værtshus.
Utställningen ”Människor och andra djur” kommer att visas på Ystads konstmuseums tredje våning 22 november 2025—6 april 2026.

About the Exhibition
“Humans and Other Animals”, a group exhibition curated by artist Lisa Strömbeck, will open on November 22. Through painting, sculpture, videos, and installations by Swedish and international artists, this exhibition explores the living conditions for animals that live near humans, the ones we call house pets or livestock. The social-emotional relationships that arise from these contexts are central to this exhibition.
Dogs’ DNA diverged from that of wolves around 27,000–40,000 years ago. The aurochs, the ancestor of modern cattle, was domesticated around 10,000 years ago. Since then, a great deal has changed. Today, pigs, cows, and chickens live in factories, where they are invisible to most people. These animals are supposed to grow quickly in order to provide food for us as cheaply as possible. At the same time, in many homes, dogs and cats are counted as family members and are just as important as the humans of the household. But regardless how the pets live, it is we humans who decide over them. In “Humans and Other Animals”, these power relationships are depicted alongside the great love and similarities between us mammals.

About the Exhibition’s Curator
Lisa Strömbeck was born in 1966 in Andrarum in eastern Scania. Today, she lives and works in Ny Hammersholt on North Zealand in Denmark. Since studying at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in the late 1990s, her work has been exhibited all over the world. Her artistic practice includes photography, video, and installation. Strömbeck embraces juxtapositions of love, ownership, and power with a recurring theme of hierarchies between humans and other animals, in which she wants to inspire empathy for the less fortunate. Between 1997 and 2009, Strömbeck also produced works for public spaces with the feminist artists’ collective Kvinder på Værtshus (Women Down the Pub).
The exhibition “Humans and Other Animals” will be shown on Ystads konstmuseum’s third floor from 22 November 2025 to 6 April 2026.
